Individuals who have MPD usually do things (one of their alter personalities) that they would not normally do, or are even aware of. Other people may think that they are acting weird, and MPD perform poorly at school, work, and at home. They are usually not understood, and do not have many friends. They stay away from people, and may even be scared of them. Because the dissociative escape is so effective, children who are very practiced at may automatically use it whenever they feel threatened or anxious even if the situation is not abusive.
