Individuals who are most likely to develop MPD have often (98-99% of the time) suffered traumatic experiences, and often life-threatening abuse at a sensitive stage of development (usually before the age of nine).
MPD is primarily recognized among females, or just as much in males but less frequently diagnosed in the male population.
This is an extremely successful method typically used by children. MPD is often referred to as "'a highly creative survival technique', because it allows individuals enduring "hopeless" circumstances to preserve some areas of healthy functioning."
Even after the traumatic experiences are long past, a person still has MPD, until it is not treated with proper therapy. MPD leads to serious problems in work, social, or daily activities if left untreated.
